Our Theme-Of-The-Week is...Water!
Water is something that so many kids love. They
splash, spill, pour, dunk, and yes, drink it too :) Here are
some ideas. As always, some play activities are also learning
opportunities, so be on the lookout for those. As always, never
leave your children alone anywhere near water, not even for a minute
to fetch a towel.
Play "Sink or Float?" in the tub or kitchen sink.
Ask your child(ren) to choose some (water-safe) toys and other
household items to set in the water. Have fun guessing if they
will sink or float in the water. If you write your guesses of a piece
of paper, you, or older kids, can chart your successes.
Play Sink or Float with your bodies :) Visit the
community pool and swim :) Do an internet search and find out
why we are so big but we can float... why is that??
Run in the sprinkler or walk in falling snow.
After the fun, read a book about rain and snow. Where do they
come from? Where does it go when it melts or "dries up"?
Sit in the tub (or outside splash pool) and see that,
when we pour "this" in the water, the water... Try bubble solution one
day, fizzing color tablets another, ice cubes another etc.
While in the tub another day, pour water from one
container to another. Will the water from this cup fit in this
bowl? Guess and test to find out :) Have lots of
containers to try out.
Get some books from the library with water as the
central theme. Whether you choose board books for wee toddlers
or rhyming stories or even early science books about rain cycles, have
fun reading them together.
Get out the paint, markers and/or crayons and draw
pictures of things that live in water.
Fill different containers with water and put them in
the freezer (or outside if it's winter). How long does it take
for each to freeze? Play with your new blocks of ice in the
water/tub/outside in a little inflatable pool.
Let your imagination run and take your children's
personalities and skill levels into account. The name of the
game is fun and silliness - and a little learning in there too is
great.
